Rock throwing statement
Date: 4 March 2011
The Mount Druitt Commuters Improvement Group condemns the “Bottle throwing” incident that occurred at 9.30 pm, Tuesday 1 March 2011, involving a Busway bus travelling in Bidwill. We express our disbelief and disgust at the perpetrators of this horrendous crime.
Rock throwing and other forms of anti-social behavior targeting public transport services cannot be tolerated in the community. Such offences not only needlessly threaten the lives of bus operators and innocent bystanders. It also has a detrimental effect on the local community, local businesses and the wider area in general. Given the important role that bus drivers play in operating bus routes, any form of attack or abuse on them is unacceptable. Bus drivers are vital aspect in maintaining the function of bus routes and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
Due to the potential negative impact that such rock throwing incidents can have on the local community. We urge anyone with any information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of the” Bottle throwing” incident to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. Rock throwing not only threatens the existence of current bus services, it also has the potential to negatively affect future routes, proposals and upgrades to local public transport services and infrastructure.
We acknowledge that rock throwing incidents involving buses (in addition to anti-social behavior such as vandalism) are not an isolated problem, rather it is a symptom of more prevalent issues in the local area. In order to effectively deal with these issues, it is important that these problems must be approached with complete support and co-operation from the residents of the local community working together with government and non-government organisations.
