Media release: Diverted and Threatened bus routes.
Date: 11 March 2011
In light of the developing events and increasing anti-social activity involving bus drivers and commuters, it represents a major concern for all members of the Mt Druitt community and surrounding suburbs. We condemn such behaviour that needlessly threatens the lives and well being of bus operators and commuters. The Mount Druitt Commuters Improvement Group urge anyone with information that can lead to the arrest and prevention of such incidents to immediately contact the police on 000 (for any crime immediately occurring) or crime stoppers on 1800 333 000
While the complete and partial restrictions of bus routes is an undesirable and unpopular measure, the Mount Druitt Commuters Improvement Group acknowledge that the lives and well being of bus operators and commuters are an absolute priority that is second to none. Anti-social behaviour not only represents a potential hazard to bus operators and commuters, these wanton acts of destruction and violence threaten the lively hoods of many members of the local community who rely on public transport to travel to and from their place of employment. It is a threat to those who are reliant on these critical services to access vital services, such as medical centres and educational opportunities. Furthermore such acts of anti-social behaviour are an affront to the values of the good and hardworking citizens of the Mount Druitt area. We cannot afford to lose this important asset, as the future prosperity of the Mount Druitt community and surrounding suburbs is dependent upon the existence and viability of public transport services.
While it is tempting to cast blame on other parties for their failings (such as the parents of the young offenders and etc), given what is at stake here, we do not have the luxury of being complacent. It is imperative that we take responsibility for our community and work together to send a strong message that anti-social behaviour is unacceptable. We must take proactive measures and offer our full support to government and non-government organisations to effectively resolve these issues.
Working together, we can “make a difference”…
