I have heard that in the United States of America somewhere, they have a different procedure for commuters entering and leaving buses. It is very simple, commuters enter the bus from the front door and get off the bus from the back door or middle door.
That's alright if you have a back door - some buses don't. In fact, in the Sydney city commuters get on and off from both front and back doors and swipe their cards and the ones without cards enter the front door and the bus driver.
Another separate idea is that everyone is issued with a transport ID card which monetary funds can be paid into into by direct payment though convenience store and outlets including financial institutions - this will then be swiped on the ticket machines on the bus- with the appropriate charge made. When there is a $10.00 balance an e-mail alert is sent to you and a reminder is sent by post.
